  • Happy Birthday Virginia

I am thinking that she would not care for all the fuss. It has been a long road for me and Virginia. Today is the launch date for FREEDOM OF THE MIND FOUGERE/HERBAL A classic fougere with both the floral and herbal attributes of orange blossom paired with the depth of absolute lavender and geranium, anchored by the richness moss and woods with just enough darkness to tie it all together. EAU DE PARFUM NOTES (smells like) OPENING: Bergamot, Sweet Fennel, Petitgrain Sur Fleurs, Dark Orange HEART: French Lavender Absolute, Cardamom, Geranium Rose, Coumarin FINISH: Moss, Sandalwood, Labdanum, Benzoin, Liquidambar, Musk Perfumers Notes: Freedom of The Mind is an olfactory interpretation of  my painting of the same name. From the Woolf Series, inspired by an old copy of the Virginia Woolf book: A Room of Ones Own. The paintings are collaged renderings that incorporate pages from the book. It is said that Virginia did not care for perfume. Yes there have been musings in regards to her writing about flowers etc. but none of that diminished (in any way) the original statement. I could imagine that if Virginia, in a statement of fact declared her disdain for perfume. She only needed to say it once. My approach was to create a perfume containing notes of flowers that did not smell like flowers. Petigrain from the orange blossom and stems, Geranium Leaves, Lavender. All of which pushed the composition into a clean, herbal and green space. Herbal and green, with character and a touch of warmth. Something that I could imagine Virginia appreciating in an un-perfume sort of way and at the same time linking that thought to my painting and the title. Freedom of The Mind. Disclosure: Contains a small amount of synthetics. Less than 3% of formula, not including carrier.

  • Channeling Virginia Woolf

I'm guessing that my relationship with Virginia is not over. It's been about four years since my first glimmer that a body of work was forming with the Woolf Series of paintings and works on paper. Almost two years since the first gallery show of some pieces, and a long stretch of contemplation as I started toying with the idea of creating a series of perfumes based on a few of the art titles and now creating new works that seem to be moving at a snails pace with what I have on the bench in the lab. I think about Virginia, how she walked right out into the middle of that river and drowned herself. Did she really have a mental illness that drove her to despair, or was she just a casualty in the war on free thinking intelligent women, born at an unforgiving time. A time when women were starting to realize that the word no actually made a sound. It also made enemies; Psychological, gaslighting as well as physically dangerous enemies. But Virginia persisted, and it is that Virginia who keeps a lot of people from wandering too close to the rivers edge. Overall this has been a big challenge. The first formula sketches with titles from my paintings, Freedom of The Mind, Size of a Shilling, we laughed until we didn't, when Everything Matters, etc... were not at all what I was looking to achieve. I hated everything. I wasn't feeling a good vibe with the smells, and that was crucial to the whole project, so I started over, and over, and now I am working on new art pieces. The last thing I want for these perfumes are conjurings of melancholy and nostalgia. Virginia was a modern woman of her time, and I want to do that justice. With this poster I took detail snippets from my paintings and layered in steampunk imagery, words from her book, A Room of Ones Own, and a giant monkey wrench, that pays a round about homage to an earlier painting inspired by a Fiona Apple title: Fetch The Bolt Cutters. From the moment I first heard it I have taken the greatest pleasure in blurting out "Fetch The Bolt Cutters" whenever there is a need for any kind of fixing. At this moment in time I wish we could all just yell out "Fetch The Bolt Cutters" and all the world problems would be solved. Well, here I am stuck again in the narrative again, trying to dig myself out. What would Virginia do. Say something wickedly profound, but in code.

  • Consolidation - Art and Olfaction

and life..... Last year I started the process of combining all of my work onto one website. It has been a long trip and finally I have a live version of this now. The stumbling block for me was finding a way to make it all work, seamlessly and have an esthetic that fit for perfume and olfactory work as well as fine art and graphics. Getting all of the setting just right. Shipping for perfume from the studio here in Ohio and fulfillment for prints and merchandise from offsite. I have been using Printful for our products, cat art and designs for over a year now, and have purchased quite a few items for my studio. The quality is great for the totes and pillows, but the art prints are a new thing. I have not ordered prints from them because we print a lot in-house and I wanted to try this before I uploaded all of my other art pages to this site. There are a few websites that specialize in art prints, but for me it is not my main focus. Most of my art is textural and collaged and large, not the best choice for prints, so investing in a partnership that specializes in this is not the best use of my time or money right now. A bit about ezKatt Graphics. ezKatt a pseudonym that I used for my print work, graphics illustrations and early design work (sometimes painting) photography, and computer graphics. Today it is mostly all about cats. Specifically Beanie the Magic Cat. Bean was born with more than his share of disabilities. I was fortunate to be able to capture his feral mom and her litter when the babies were just a couple of days old. It was clear from the start that Bean was not like the others. His back legs were hyperextended, he had no tail and he was unable to nurse without help. His mom Peggy was a great kitty mom. She let me hold him next to her so he could feed. As the kittens grew the others would run and play while Beanie sleep in his little bed. He could not keep up with them and so he didn't even try. Once they were eating solid food, I started taking Beanie to bed with me. By that time he was pulling himself up on everything and fearless. We had many touch and go moments, and have always made it through. Today Beanie is fifteen years old. We have lost Peggy as well as his brother Daniel and sister Juniper. Sisters Lucy and Phoebe are still here, and they are fine. Circling back around to the artwork, I wanted to do something special with all of the Beanie photographs and art I had amassed over the years. As I started to share Beanies story with my studio visitors, I knew that these bold colorful graphic designs would be the perfect way to do that. This is his personality. He is colorful, and bold and he endures. I don't know how much longer I will have him, so this work is important to me. I hope it will bring a smile to your face as well. From here in the little river valley, I feel like we are headed down the long trail once again. I look around at this world and I am sad and less hopeful. Maybe it is all of the information, so much despair. We are so talented as a species, I am perplexed by the fact that we are not living in harmony, not joyful and kind. That joy is found in destruction and kindness is a weakness of the flawed. How do we turn it all around and save ourselves. Can we save ourselves. I know that I was saved by my art and a little helpless cat who needed someone to step up for him. Maybe in that way we can save each other. One kindness at a time. Wishing you happy Joy!

  • Freedom of The Mind

A snippet of words from Virginia Woolf's a Room of Ones Own. Has been bouncing around in my head for awhile as I think about how to translate my painting of the same name, to scent. I spent two years working on my Woolf Series and this one keeps popping up. Those words keep popping up. It is the title of a painting. With this series I took pages from an old copy of the book to use as collage pieces. This particular one is where she uses those words. I feel like I have lost my way a bit since working on those paintings. I have been a mission without a cause, an empty suit wandering around waiting for the next sprinkling of magic dust to penetrate my skin, hijack my brain and kick me in the ass. Virginia has been everywhere lately. Social media quotes, imagery etc... It isn't her birthday, so I will create my own scenario and imagine that is in fact that magic dust penetrating my skin. Skin. that... brings it all full circle. Once I settled the bet with myself I got to work, fleshing out the idea. What does freedom of the mind smell like. Is it bright, acerbic. Is it dark and unruly. Is it structured with an option to push the boundaries, or is it just plain old anarchy. I am choosing to ride the rails of anarchy with a nod to structure and a lot of dark and unruly. Also strangeness. There will be strange and peculiar and odd and like free jazz, a desire to run naked through the streets of syncopated rhythms, thumbing my nose at the world. ok... so that last one is just another way of saying anarchy. Anarchy it is. Freedom of the mind is anarchy. and to pun a quote. I love the smell of anarchy in the morning... Freedom of The Mind: The painting. A Perfume: Fall 2023.... more to come.

  • Shop Product Updates

This is going to be a busy week. I am filtering the last of the current batch Underworld and should have it back in the 50ml by weeks end. This batch has sold out faster than I had anticipated and I am playing catch up. Also the last of the Oudh Lacquer will be filtered. We are at the end of the road with the original process. It is impossible to obtain the exact oils and woods I used for the carrier base fifteen years ago, so it will be remade as close as possible to the original, but not exact. The perfume formula has been made several times over the years and it too must go through a few changes. Of all the perfumes I have created, this one is probably the closest to my heart as it is an homage to my father. my little black Corvette and my dads work as a custom car magician who cut and pasted exotic cars and specialized in corvettes. While I am at it more blasts from the past are also on the bench to be remade. Tobacco & Tulle, Bottleneck Blues and Misetu.

  • New For Fall

This is the time of year when things get a bit strange. Cool winds whipping around, leaves falling from trees and darkness. If it were not for the eternal darkness I would love these later months. A perfect day for me is mid 70's light breeze and sunny skies. I could go even lower on the temps as long as the sun is shining. Today is one of those perfect days here in the valley and I am getting my work done before going for a walk down to the pines. On a more ambitious day I would trek down to the river. So what's new.. Acousticjus: the little brand that could, but got sidetracked, is back online. I have been working it out with these oils. Most things that were available at the studio are now available here. I still need to get the solids restocked and update the Stellar Essence body oils to include a few more titles, but overall the transition from my studio to web has gone well. The Oud Unguents are now online as well. New from Soivohle Many of the newer titles in our soivohle line will be in an eau de parfum concentration. These include a newly reworked CIRCA 1969 WOODMIRE and BENDING LIGHT. REWARDS AND COUPONS The discounts for rewards points have been updated to include more tiers. We are not currently offering subscription boxes, but these rewards points are the next best way to receive new products at a discount. For every dollar spent you receive 1 point. The more points you accumulate, the greater discount you are eligible to receive. There is one catch however. You have to use them. If you are a subscriber, and a repeat customer, check on your points status. It may surprise you. As always, Thank You for your continued support. Liz

  • More House Cleaning

After selling out of the overstock shop inventory, I have been bottling up the last of the perfumes in the Atelier and Modern Collections. I have been so behind in all of this. Live and learn. We do not have enough of the 50ml tall square crimp bottles to continue bottling in this size, so I have gone to a 30ml bottle with screw on atomizer, for the remaining stock on these perfumes. They are being sold unboxed, because I do not have labels set up for a box of this size, so the difference is reflected in the lower pricing. So grateful for everyone who continues to support Soivohle. It will take me a minute to get reorganized, but feeling good about it so far. For those who misunderstood what has happened. Again, I have not gone out of business, or stopped making perfume. I only closed the scent bar that was in my studio at the art center. I no longer sell perfumes in person at the studio. As for the brand. I have a new collection that is set to launch in a few weeks. I have been sitting on this for over a year. The time was never right and my time was always limited as I had been trying to do too many things. Thanks Again, Liz

  • Closed, Not Closed

As stated in our recent mailing, the perfume counter at my studio is now closed. We will continue to work from the website, and maintain an online presence as we have done for over twenty years. No Soivohle is not going out of business. I have no idea how these rumors get started. Perfumes not on the website... There are quite a few perfumes not on the website at the moment. Many of them are available upon request. No they are not on sale. The only perfumes on sale are the overstock of the Atelier Collection that were left over from the studio move. Yes and No.... Some of the familiar names in the Atelier Collection have been reformulated to remove older, less desirable ingredients, any and all animal products, and batched out to a lower eau de toilette concentration. Most of them smell the same as their older versions, just not as heavy. Will they return after the sale.. Not right away. I have a project that has been in the works for about 1.5 years. My desire at this point is to get that off the ground and focus more on the future. Thanks, Liz

  • Big Changes

Our stand alone Soivohle site is now the hub for Liz Zorn parfums. Being that we offer selections from all of our scent collection in the Atelier, it is becoming a drag to send people off with two or even three different biz cards for three different websites just for perfumes. Confusing, yeah I get that. Not worth the hassle. That too. There is no easy fix for the biz as a whole. Most people who come here (online) for perfume are not (also) looking for fine art or even graphic design. But there's the rub. Providing easy access to everything online can be a bit overwhelming, and yes I am a workaholic..... and yes there is a bit of everything in the physical space. With the atelier/studio being open more thru the week, perfume sales have been increasing and the interest has been across the board. Hopefully this will make things a tad easier for for you and us and everyone who leaves the studio with our info in hand. Cheers and Happy Spring. I am a summer kinda gal, so bring on the sun and fun...
